How to Clean Your House for Thanksgiving

You are buying the turkey and preparing the Thanksgiving meal for family and friends when it dawns on you that your home is a mess. If you are faced with not enough time to clean the entire house, there are things you can do to make your home presentable in a short time. What follows is the starting point for how to clean your house for Thanksgiving. Once completed, you can take the next step towards cleaning your home if you have the time.

Start with the Bathroom

If you cannot clean any other part of the home, the bathrooms will have to do. Make sure the toilet is scrubbed, the sink, mirror, and floor cleaned, and the toilet paper is re-stocked. A fresh towel or two will be quite helpful along with some soap or hand sanitizer.

Vacuum the Floors

After the bathrooms are done, get out the vacuum cleaner and give the floors and carpeting a once-over. Start with the entryways and work your way across the living room, hallways, and any room in which your visitors will be.

Wipe & Sweep the Kitchen

Grab a towel and wipe off the kitchen countertops after you have completed the meal. A quick wipe will ensure that everything looks neat and tidy. If you have the time, sweep the floor with a broom so that all the crumbs and splatters are picked up as well. You can use a paper towel, set it down on the floor, and rub with your shoe to pick up any spots that the broom didn’t get.

If you have a dishwasher, put all the dishes from the sink inside it and start it up. Running a dishwasher will not give a bad impression, at least compared to a sink-full of dirty dishes. If you do not have a dishwasher, you should clean and put away as many dishes as you can.

Dust the Rest of the Home

Only go over the rooms in which your guests will visit, so focus on the dining room and living room first. Dust off the tables and pick up any clutter. This will make your home more presentable when the guests arrive.

Finish Up

Congratulations, you have managed to make your home presentable. If you still have time, you can do the following to make your home even more prepared for your guests:

  • Fluff the pillows on the couch
  • Turn off the overhead light in the living room and turn on the lamps
  • Clear a place for coats and jackets to be placed
  • Remove any remaining clutter and take out the trash
  • Put on some holiday-themed music, you’ve earned it

If you have a few minutes remaining, give your home a quick once-over to clean or remove anything glaring. Do not get into a rush as that makes it easier to miss something important.
